My mom did a great job feeding all of us on a tight budget. I have no real complaints, I never had to go to bed hungry. She was a great cook, but big on sausage and heavy on meat. So... as an adult, I eat probably less meat than others. She also loved liver and onions. For some reason, she fried the heck out of it until it was tough. You won't see me buying a container of that for a meal. She also would grind up leftover beef and pork (in the old fashioned hand meat grinder) along with potato to make a hash. The texture of it reminded me of already chewed food. Shame on me for being picky!
I belonged to the "Clean your plate club" I ate and LOVED everything she made. Like KK, we had Liver and Onions, and I still love It. The HASH she made with the left over meat, and potatoes was the GREATEST. She would also bake extra potatoes, and cut them up In chunks, and brown them good, and add a package of wieners cut up, and keep browning the whole pan. They were my favorite. She DIDN'T throw food away like we do today. Leftovers were ALWAY'S turned into something. Working, and feeding 5 kids, Dad, and herself was a BIG chore for her, but she did It EVERY night, except Friday, we sometimes got a treat with Fish at Hammes.
Toad, we lived that same lifestyle. The food was somewhat different, but nothing was thrown away. I still strive for that, and rarely have to throw anything out. As kids, we occasionally did the fish fry at Sunshine. (what a dump, but the fish was good)
Can I say how happy I am to see you writing more, Toad?
KK, Can you still smell the GREASE In the air from Sunshine, and that REALLY tall lady that did the cooking? We went to Sunshine, and Mel's Spa once and awhile also. But In the later years It was Russ's Tap for Duck on Saturday night. I think that's what killed my dad at 56, all the Duck skin he ate? Of course the Stingers, and Cigarettes didn't help. Pall Mall. YUCK.
That area of town has really gone further downhill. I drive past there, but would never stop long enough to sniff the air. They converted the Krantz (sp?) building into a Workforce Development, city service building. There are usually people just hanging out on the street around there. Big decline. We were very young kids when we went to Sunshine with my parents. I just remember the back room and the curved booths. I don't remember any of the employees. We later started going to the VFW for their fish fry. Again... decades ago.
I tried posting from my phone earlier.. guess I really do need to get a new email google address. I guess my Mom was a good cook. Always kept us well fed, and in the budget ( I guess) Family of 6. Can't think of anything I really hated except for gizzards and liver. Her and my younger sister would eat them. Makes me gag even to write that. Hash.. I still make it. Got an 'old fashioned' meat grinder at a garage sale, still nice and shiny. I tried making it in a food processor one time and it was like baby food.. Grew up on the north side, so our big treat was Dino's pizza (when Dad was gone) or KFC on friday grocery shopping day. They'd shop at Kohls and KFC was right down the street. I wonder if that is why I don't like cooking anything after I've shopped? Mom also cooked a lot with cabbage ( Hungarian thing?) Dad never ate much of that so she'd make it when he was gone hunting.

ReplyDeleteYou know, I can't remember a meal I hated either. My mom was a fantastic cook. Dad loved meat and potatoes, so we basically had that.
